2012 ITINERARY
June 28th, we will leave Grundy at
4:00 P.M.. We will meet at Grundy Funeral Home
for a photo op for the trip. Today we will
drive to Louisville, Ky and overnight there.
June 29th, we will leave Louisville,
Ky., and drive to Kansas City MO today. We will
most likely overnite at the Oak Park KOA near
exit 28. During today’s drive, we will see the
Ohio River, Cross the Mississippi River,
Missouri River, travel through the farmlands of
Indiana and Illinois, we can see strip Jobs near
the Indiana-Illinois Border. These strip jobs
are about 40 years old and are reclaimed coal
mines. When we arrive in St. Louis, we will see
the Jefferson National Expanse (St. Louis Arch),
Busch Stadium, Greater St. Louis Airport.
June 30th – Today we will travel into
Independence MO and visit the Harry S. Truman
Museum. For people’s information, Harry S.
Truman was the President of the USA that
succeeded Franklin D. Roosevelt. After we visit
the Truman Center, we will drive to St. Joseph
MO and tour the Pony Express Museum. FYI, St.
Joseph is where the Oregon Trail started for the
many wagon trains that traveled westward. We
will continue in a northerly direction to Sioux
Falls SD. We will probably camp tonight in
Mitchell SD.
July 1 – Today we will tour the Corn Palace in
Mitchell, travel westward to Chamberlain SD and
tour the Lewis and Clark exhibit that is located
there. We will then travel on to the Badlands
and overnite there.
July 2, we will explore parts of the Badlands
and then travel to Wall Drug in Wall SD. This
is one of the greatest tourist traps in America
and is quite enjoyable. That evening, we plan
on doing the closing flag ceremony at Mt.
Rushmore.
July 3, we plan on raising the flag at Crazy
Horse Memorial at 7:30 A.M. Then we will tour
Crazy Horse and then visit Custer State Park.
We also will attempt to tour Wind Cave.
July 4 – Today we travel to Devils Tower
National Monument, America’s first National
Monument. We will tour Devil’s Tower and camp
there that evening. Hopefully, we will be
allowed to do a flag ceremony here.
July 5 – we will travel to the Little Big Horn
Battlefield where Custer had his deadly
encounter with the Sioux nation. From there we
will travel through Red Lodge MT and onto the
Bear Tooth Highway which according to world
travel Charles Kuralt, this is the most
photogenic drive in North America. This will
lead us into the NE corner of Yellowstone NP.
We will overnite at Grant Village – Yellowstone
NP
July 6 – We will tour Yellowstone NP visiting
Yellowstone Falls, Old Faithful, the Fountain
Paint Pots and other sights.
July 7 – We will travel to the Grand Tetons NP
and there we will attend the Bar J Chuckwagon
Dinner Theatre. We will overnite in
Yellowstone.
July 8, we will leave Yellowstone and travel out
the NW entrance at West Yellowstone and drive
the Valley by way of Quake Lake and on to Great
Falls, MT.
July 9 Group 1 will travel to Fort Benton MT to
overnite there and prepare for the canoe trip.
Group 2 will travel on to West Glacier, MT and
overnite there.
July 10, Group 1 will embark on their canoe trip
for the next 7 days. Group 2 will start their
tour of the Glacier National Park area. When
Group 1 re-emerges 7 days later at Kipp
Recreation area, Group 2 will already be there
by leap-frogging in front of Group 1.
July 17, we will leave Kipp Recreation Area and
travel Eastward to Bismark ND.
July 18, we will tour the Theodore Roosevelt
National Park and continue on to Minneapolis
July 19, we will travel to the Wisconsin Dells
and overnite there
July 20th, we will tour the Wisconsin
Dells area.
July 21 we will travel to Springfield Illinois
area and there tour the Lincoln Museum and Tomb
and probably spending the night in Cayce IL
July 22 – we will travel home to Grundy,
Virginia
